Key differences between SS513:2015 and SS513:2024

Workplace safety standards continue to evolve, and Singapore has recently updated its safety footwear requirements with the release of SS513:2024 (published as SS 513‑1:2024 and SS 513‑2:2024). This new edition aligns more closely with international best practices and introduces stronger requirements for protection and performance.

Detailed Changes

1. Adoption of the Latest International Standard

The 2015 version was based on EN ISO 20345:2011. The 2024 version now explicitly adopts and aligns with EN ISO 20345:2022.

2. New Protection Classes

  • Categories such as S6 and S7 have been introduced, offering enhanced water resistance.
  • S6 has the same protection requirements as S2, but with additional water resistance (WR) requirements.
  • S7 corresponds to S3, but also has additional water resistance (WR) requirements.

3. Revised Marking System

  • Puncture resistance is now marked as P, PL, or PS depending on insert type and test force.
  • PL (Large perforation resistance) and PS (Small perforation resistance) are newly introduced symbols for non-metallic puncture protection. This marking is for non-metallic inserts that provide protection against large-point (PL) /small-point (PS) hazards.
  • Slip resistance requirements are stronger and fully integrated.
  • Previously, there was no distinction based on material or performance level – only “P” for general puncture protection.

4. Stronger Baseline Requirements

  • Minimum standards for slip resistance and water resistance have been raised.

5. Expanded Scope of Application

  • Clearer rules now apply to customized safety footwear, including insoles and individually manufactured shoes.

Explicitly aligned with EN ISO 20345:2022

Protection Classes

Up to S5

New classes S6 & S7 (enhanced water resistance)

Marking System

Basic markings for puncture & slip resistance

Updated markings: P, PL, PS for puncture; stronger integrated slip resistance

PL (Large perforation resistance) and PS (Small perforation resistance) are newly introduced symbols for non-metallic puncture protection.

Previously, there was no distinction based on material or performance level – only “P” for general puncture protection.

Slip resistance requirements

Markings SRA / SRB / SRC; tests with ceramic tile + detergent and steel + glycerol.

The markings “SRA”, “SRB” and “SRC” have been removed and replaced with “SR” and “Ø”.

“SR” is a higher level of slip resistance. Shoes with the “SR” marking perform excellently on slippery wet surfaces, when the sole is tested on a ceramic tile with glycerine.

Ø Marking (Not Tested): Indicates shoes where slip resistance cannot be tested.

Water resistance requirements

Upper water resistance (WRU) optional / in certain classes only.

WRU replaced by WPA (Water Penetration & Absorption) for uppers; full boot waterproofing (WR) introduced;

New classes S6 (similar to S2 + full water resistance) and S7 (like S3 + full water resistance) added.

Scope of Application

Clearer rules for customized safety footwear
